You do NOT have the processing power OR the bandwidth to do this. If you are going to get into the "Big Time" .. you need "Big Time" Servers and Bandwidth .. no way around it. Forget the movie about the "Social Network" those days are no longer here. Universities now throttle quite a bit so one user doesnt hog it all.

The other problem is the your provider is probably throttling you on the UPSIDE.. this is why T1's, T3's are SO necessary.. they allow the same UP and they do DOWN. You are NOT going to put 1000 users on a DSL or Cable modem.. you arent even going to put 100 people.. you'd be lucky to get 20 users...and their connection speed and response would SUCK beyond belief to the point of NON-EXISTANCE.

I have TWO T1's at ONE of my Data Centers.. We have 200 Citrix users on a constant basis. We are running about 30 different "REAL" HP DL380 G5 Rack Mounted SERVERS for 5 Environments. We space it out to about 20 users per Virtual Server and can ONLY RUN (efficently) about 4 VMWARE virtual servers one ONE "ACTUAL" SERVER.

AND.. You BETTER be using Microsoft Windows SERVER 2003 or better.. OR UNIX.. Linux "may" work.. but its not designed for heavy server usage. If you use ANY other OS the connections are limited to 10 connections (XP, VISTA Etc)..

Your Hardware is WOEFULLY Inadequate... I mean WOEFULLY. It is NOT a server. Dont try to make a workstation act as a server for much more than 3 or 4 people. I haven't even TOUCHED Netowork Security.. not going to waste my time explaining it.. You cant even start this thing.

Just to give you an idea.. I worked as a senior Server Tech at the 2nd largest hospital in the State of Florida. It took 6 RACKS of HP Servers to service 3000 users (citrix).. and that was INHOUSE on a SOLID Dual OCX12 Fiber Backbone (Cisco Switching 100mbps to workstations). Internet speed is a FRACTION of that kind of connection speed.

Do you SEE what i'm trying to say?

Here are some notes to answer you and clarify a few points:

- Most ISPs don't allow their users to have web servers. For this reason, the standard ports are usually blocked and they also identify those on non-standard ports through monitoring. This will probably get you banned if you get any significant amount of traffic.

- Residential connections usually have a very small upload speed compared to the download speed whereas the opposite would be better for hosting purposes.

- The computer and connection requirements depend on the site content and the amount of traffic. There is absolutely no possible rule of thumb here.

- All known web sites eventually get attacked! If you don't have the proper equipment or security software in place, they will take over your machine, often without you realizing it.

Your point about not having much money doesn't cut it as there are tons of free web hosts that don't even include any advertising, depending on what you want to do. If what you do is beyond those free hosts, extremely cheap paid solutions do exist (as in less than 10$ per year).

What kinda website are you going to host?

If its youtube type vedio sharing, streaming server.. u'll need high BW.

Simple blogs or General info sites with pics and flashes will require only small BW. You can make use of free Apps like wrodpress, joomla. easy to use. :)

If you r from India. I suugest monthly plan of BSNL .. Home 750. you cannot use it for commercioal purpose. But who cares i used to share my files in my home PC. you'll need to keep that thing runninf 24/7. Watch out ! your mom will scold u for wasting electricity .

The only thing you will need is a static IP. For that you will have spend an extra 1000 or 2000 something. I used a dynamic IP binding free naming service. (omg What did i say?) yeah there is some service provider who bind you dynamic IP to a Domain name. I did it for few months. Now i dont rememer. Some one pls help him.

And oooo i forgot u'll need a ADSL router with Port forwarding feature in it. So if you are buying ask specifically for something like that. and if u need to host streaming services like live TV or Live song. U'll need a router with multicast. Try Dlink rate starting from around 1000.

so, over all when you calculate your expences.. dont forget to compare with hosting service provider. like Hostgator... it will cost only 3000 ruppes for 1 year. No need of HDD, No need of NEt connection, No need of Router :D
