This will show you what your computer is currently connected to.

netstat -a

WireShark will show you all the packets in and out of your computer; source/destination and ports.

I second that if you hit ctrl + Alt + Del and choose the processes tab and then choose to set the memory in accending order or most to least jot down the name of the process like the .exe or whatever it is and google the process. Alot of time you may just have a problem that turns on when your computer is idle to clean the system or what not.

It will be a hunt and peck type job but end the end you will find out exactly what it is that is bothering your computer so much. Just remove that program.

if its a laptop try turning off your wi fi. if that dosent work it may be some kind of virus that isnt being detected. you might even have a problem with the computer that it thinks its useing more memory than it is so check out that too. and if you cant figure out what it is call geek squad or something becuse im sure you dont want anyone looking through your stuff.

It may be some kind of program update but it would notice you if its starting or if its stopped. Anyway start monitoring your connection, when this problem occurs, check what is using the bandwidth. Find yourself an program which you could start monitoring with. Use something like this : http://www.bysoft.com/networkmonitor.php . You can google for another one : network monitoring etc.

what version of windows are you running?

go to start, run, type: msconfig

go to the startup tab and uncheck any unnecessary boxes (these are things that start up with your computer)

Other than that, the other good advice which was already given is to wait until this problem starts happening again, then CTRL-ALT-DEL and look at which process is being a resource hog. End task.

In Task Manager, click on Processes tab and see what's using the most. If you don't know what it is, Google it to make sure it's not malware.
