Question:
Why does my computer run so slowly? (details)?

I have anti-virus (Avast), Ad-aware, Registry cleaner (Eusing free cleaner), and have run each several times with no "problems" showing up on the scan reports. I have also de-frag-ed many times. If I re-start my computer, things are faster for a short time, then it slows down again and often freezes for a few seconds at a time. Even typing is "delayed". I have Windows Vista and an HP Pavilion computer (computer is 2 1/2 yrs. old)

It is annoying. Any suggestions?

Lot's of things you can do to speed up the computer and the connecting to the internet and even the speed it has for your connection. That way you get more from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Starting with speeding up Vista and later you will need to tell me the name of the wired and wireless cards you are using if you want to speed up the two of them.

1. click Start

2. click Computer

3. right click on the hard drive the c: drive

4. click on Properties

5. un-check Index this hard drive for faster searching (this was put on there to allow you to search the computer faster for files such as photo's, music, and movies.) How ofter do people do that?

6. click Okay

7. click Okay

8. restart Computer, first time you do this it's updating to the new changes but you will see a change in the speed of it shutting down and then starting up and then you restart the computer once more. After that it will be the new speed and the changes are already completed from the first restart. Many that have done this told me "it's like you gave me a brand new computer!" or "it's like my computer is new again".

Now to speed up your connecting to the Wired and WiFI and connection speed too.

1. right click on your Wireless bars in the lower right hand corner.

2. click on Open Network and Sharing Center

3. click on Change Adapter Settings

4. right click on Wireless Connection

5. click on Properties and then click Yes

6. un-check TCP/IPv6

7. click Ok

8. repeat steps 5 through 7 for the Wired Connection

9. restart the computer

You can also update the drivers some manufacturers stop making drivers for that particular wired/wireless card. Remember your computer can be brand new or old does not mean you have the newest drivers they have to be manually updated and the best way is to search on Google for them. To follow the instructions they have listed on their site for installation of those drivers if none given then ask on Yahoo Answers for further help.

You can also use CCleaner to help get rid of unused and unwanted things from your computer to further speed it up. Try the first thing then see how much faster then do the next, reason is so you can truly see how much it increased the speed just by doing each of these things.

BTW... There is more that I can do but this answer is getting to be very long and it's very late for me. If you have done these and want more answers from me send me a mail through my profile on Yahoo Answers.. I am sure the things in my answers will truly help your computer.

Remember to vote for best answer, thanks!

Responding to your Reply.... - You speed up your Belkin by unplugging it for 30 seconds this will help you can do that once a month; that is the most you would need to do it. I power cycled mine about 3 times in a year. 1 of those times is because of power failure from ice storm.

What type of wireless card are you using? Cheap cards will barely let you tweak (modify) the software for a better connection and the expensive ones are confusing even when you see them. However they do offer a lot better options on tweaking it and signal strength.

If you need steps on that then please start another question this answer is getting to be super long. Besides that more information is needed to know what type and if your not sure how to find it then I will need to guide you there in steps.

Have you done any of these steps? Yes you can also buy more RAM and depends if you want to spend the time and money doing that. Laptops and Desktops both can be upgraded, however the cost and difficulty levels are very different. Lower cost and difficulty is for desktops and can recommend which RAM to buy but need spec's to give you the best answer. I would recommend picking a best answer then ask new questions. If you want my help do that and add me as friend on here then I will get an email telling me you asked new questions.

Simple answer to this question. Most people install to many programs that run in the background so remove or at least stop the background tasks that are running. To do that click Start>Click "Run"> then type "msconfig">in the new window that appears click the tab at the top that reads "Startup"> then uncheck any program that yo do not need running. Most programs you disable can easily be accessed through the start menu already they just take longer to start up(load) than if they are lying in wait and slowing down the computer. After unchecking the programs you no longer want starting up with your computer close out and restart. A box will open up letting you know you have chosen a selective start up. just check the box and hit "OK". That box will not appear anymore until you make the changes again. If that does not help to revert back just do all the steps over again except make sure to check all boxes or on the first tab select "Normal Startup". Virus's are another cause for poor performance but the majority of the people with a slow running computer is background task cause most already have anti virus programs, not saying much for a persons anti virus program if it let the virus on the computer in the first place, is it? Doubt seriously if that is your problem unless you do not have an anti virus program running!?!?

1 upgrade your Ram to at least 4 gigs

download a program called Advance System Care

www.download.com

install it and update it then run it

if you using firefox try chrome instead it uses less ram

do you know what you have running in the back ground.

do you know how to access windows config for boot up

go to start

run

type in

msconfig

when the window pops up go to start up

unselect all and select apply then ok

restart the computer

once it boots a pop up window will appear don't worry that normal check box don't remind me and click ok

see how this works.

also have you delete temp files cashe and internet temp files.

how full is your hard drive the fuller it is the slower it can run

could also be a old or dying hard drive slowing down depending on hard drive shape.

Clean Windows Registry :

Defragment your PC to increase computer speed:

Add more RAM to Speed up your computer

Clear Cache, history and temporary internet files

Turn off unnecessary programs from start up:

Have low intensity graphics

Uninstall unused software and programs

The above guidelines were really helpful to speed up my computer. These are safe and do impact computer performance in a positive way.

Vista is a RAM-hungry operating system! If you have less than 1GB RAM you should get Windows XP. Or you can get more RAM like 2GB and get Windows 7!

Here are some programs:

1. CCleaner - cleans up junk files, temporary files and boosts performance

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

2. Auslogics Disk Defrag - Improves your computer performance by optimizing file system

Hope I Helped :)

probable too little RAM, and using software like latest version of Skype (which eats up as much RAM as it can get, up to 600Mb), Firefox (greatest memory hog of all, can reach to up to 1.5Gb with stunning rates, when it's hungry), or other software with large memory consumption. You can see how much memory each one is taking in the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Escape), in the "Processes" tab. Order by the "memory" column, and see who's the greatest memory consumer. Better do it when the laptop is working at it's peak slowness.
