I want to install Linux, now and fast.?

Hi! I am seriously tired of Windows and now I really want to install Linux while not uninstalling Windows.

I've tried to read some guides, but wow, they are long! I want to just install it now! Are there any short and simple guides for beginners out there? It's not like i don't wanna read loads of text, i guess it's just that while i'm not a beginner at using computers and installing stuff, i'm a beginner when it comes to linux itself! i've never bothered to look it up before! anything good and fast out there?

I understand that there are veery many different versions of Linux, but how would I be able to choose? I have no idea about what I should choose! I want something that is like windows, but is fast. something that is common and easy. that's just it! nothing too complicated! any recommendations for standard linuxes?

I see that i have to make a new partion for linux. any good guides on how to do that? how much space should i make for linux? can linux later access my other partions?



anything else you can recommend me? could we exchange emails so i can ask more closely? anything is appriciated! thank you so much!

Whew! While what you want is at least partially possible, it's not completely possible. Linux has become easy to use and stable, but you're still going to have a lot of learning to do. There simply is no way around that.



But: I recommend Ubuntu. Go to www.ubuntu.com and download version 8.04. Download the live CD, which will allow you to "run" Ubuntu under Windows, although you won't be able to save anything. You will be able to "preview" your Linux installation, however.



If you like it, there's an install icon right on your desktop. Click it, and you get a guided installer that walks you right through partitioning and setup chores.



There's also a Windows installer called "wubi" that's available for download. Take the ISO file and wubi, put them in the same folder under Windows, and launch Wubi; in a little while, you'll have a dual-boot setup ready to go. You'll have Open Office, Firefox, Evolution Mail, and several other apps installed when everything is finished, too, so you won't have to go through all that.



Yes, Ubuntu (and some other version of Linux) can access your Windows partition and copy docs and other files to Linux partitions. However, Windows cannot "see" Linux partitions without installing a separate file system driver.



Some problem areas: Sometimes printers are hard to configure, and not all of them are supported, although it's sometimes possible to work around that.



Scanners are difficult, but you may get lucky. I did not.

Well, I would recommend Ubuntu. It is the most common Linux Distribution to Windows (XP), and is faster, has some great visual effects and mouse gestures that Microsoft would just never think of, and can be installed really quickly. If you want to keep Windows as well, you could use something like Easeus Partition Master to partition your hard drive without losing data, and install Ubuntu on the new partition, or you could use Wubi, the Ubuntu installer for Windows, and you can then have Ubuntu and Windows on one hard drive, no partitioning, in less than 30 minutes http://wubi-installer.org/. or you could just download it, burn it to a CD and delete your existing Windows installation to install Ubuntu instead http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. Once you put this in your computer and boot from it, you can try Ubuntu straight from the CD as well without even installing it, just to get a taste for it. But, when it is running from the CD it will be slower than once it is installed properly, so don't judge the speed from that.

In my enjoy Linux is greatly quicker than Windows and will make an historical pc appear like new. On Linux you've unique Desktops to opt for from. KDE and Gnome are the names of the 2 such a lot widespread Desktops, however there are different ones which you'll be able to opt for that are a lot quicker. Use Wubi. It install's Linux while running windows just like a normal software. Since you are a beginner try Kubuntu. I would recommend giving linux about 10 Gb space. If your windows is password protected i dont think you can access it's partition through Linux. You can mail me if you want to know more :)

Download Ubuntu (linux operating system) from

www.ubuntu.com

it is completly free, once downloaded, it will be in .ISO format. you can extract it with a program called PowerISO.

Once extracted, go to where you extracted it to and click "wubi.exe" or "umenu.exe" to install it will come up with a Installation window. click to install on drive C:, chose which language you want



IMPORTANT* add in a username and password, make sure you remember or you will Not be able to log in.



during installation the computer will restart, Installing this way will not remove any other operating systems you have on the computer



when you turn on your computer, during start up you will have the option to run with Ubuntu or windows



when i start up my computer, i have the choice to start up with..

i always recomend UBUNTU. it is the best and fastest, i think better than windows.

1.download ubuntu from ubuntu.com.

2. it will be in .iso format. burn it to a cd

3. open your operating system(which ever youare using).

4. insert the cd and select install ubntu inside yoursystem like othe softwares.

5. select on which partition you need to be installed and follow the proceedures.



no need to format your hard disk.

you can even install it on the current operating system is installed



it will not affect your previous operating system.

you can also access your previous system and partition.
