Do I need Microsoft SQL Server on my laptop?

Hi everyone,

A few days ago my dad gave me an old IBM Thinkpad that he doesn't use anymore. He got it from his company but he retired and they didn't want it back. He used the laptop daily to connect to the company's VPN server, made calls from it, etc. The hard drive on this laptop is pretty small (only 12gb), and I need all the free space I can get because I need to have multiple applications installed for the type of work that I do. I was going through the Program Files folder on my C drive a few minutes ago and saw a "Microsoft SQL Server" folder in there that took up 1GB. I really need the space and I don't think I use SQL, but I'm not sure if I should delete it or not, because I know that there are certain applications that use it. When my dad gave me the laptop I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro and updated everything, but there are still some Windows 2000 files on the computer from when he owned it (I can clean those out easily). I will be using the computer for home and school use, I won't be connecting to any special company networks, just the wireless network at my house, and at my school. I'll be using normal applications such as Microsoft Office, Google Earth, iTunes, etc. Could anyone give me some feedback on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really need the hard drive space.

Thanks!

If you did a clean install, those old Windows 2000 files should not be there. Maybe you didn't do it right.

If all you do is to install MS SQL Server, then you obviously do NOT need to install Oracle. What gave you THAT idea ? Obviously you need a proper OS installed before installing SQL Server. That can be a desktop OS if all you do is playing with it. For a production environment you will need a server OS (MS Windows Server 2008 for example). How about reading the exact requirements for MS SQL Server in its documentation before installing anything ?

No you don't need Microsoft SQL Server on your laptop. Windows XP Pro will run everything just fine for you.

If you don't plan to do any sort of web app hosting or do any desktop work requiring a database, you can probably get rid of it. However, I would back up any mdb (database) files first (and note the folders and path they resided in) just in case some app is using them that you didn't know about...that way, if something stops working you can recreate the folders and databases without SQL Server itself.
