Linux is a free (usually) open-source community project operating system. There are thousands of different versions of Linux all having their own features and efficiencies. Some versions of Linux are for Home computers, Some are for servers, others built for hacking. They are changed to be more efficient at what they are made to do, for example, a gaming version of Linux may come with Wine(a program to allow Linux to run windows apps) and may not have the functionality you would find on a server or home computers because taking them out will make the gaming faster. Linux can be installed several ways depending or what version you are trying to get. You can download an installer which is a small piece of linux that will allow you to connect and install the rest of the operating system once it is run. Next there are also Live CDs which you buy for a couple dollars for shipping costs and you can install linux by booting to the CD. There are other ways to install linux but it depends on what options the creator leaves open. I have had issues with installing linux on one of my other computers ( couldn't install the base system ) but you are sure to find installation instructions on the website and every version is just a little different when it comes to setting it up. Linux shows its true power once you are familiar with the command line but until them most versions come with a fancy GUI. There are 4 or 5 common GUI's for linux the most common being KDE 4 and Gnome. Gnome is the basic one that doesn't have as many features as KDE 4 but some KDE4 users claim that it is a little more confusing because of all the options and not knowing what does what. If you are interested it never hurts to try linux on your windows machine, there are several ways you can "test drive" Linux without fully installing it. Hope this helped! :)
