If Windows:
There are many folder locking softwares on the web. Hit in google you will easily get one. Install and enjoy locking.
If Linux/Solaris:
I don't think we need encryption here. Changing permission would do what ever you want.
Just change the permissions of the directory so that no one else can "cd" into that directory. You can use the "chmod" command.
Try this : chmod og-rwx
Actually it would be enough if you remove "x" permission.
Hope this helps.

A $10 or $20 flash drive can help you out....
I have a lexar jump drive that lets me place folders into a vault on the hard drive or the flash drive to encrypt and password protect.....
you don't need to encrypt them ... you can either hide them if you (if the people u r hiding from are somewhat computer illiterate and don't know how to access hidden folders)
Or else you can compress it to either .zip or .rar format and give it a password for uncompressing it !
Also there are many softwares in the market these days that you could find which allows your folders to be password protected !
