was online last night when some sort of pop up came up and i hit what i thought was cancel but the next thing i knew some new program was already and installed and running on my computer. Then my background turned to a blue screen. My virus protection kept popping up saying it was blocking it. then it said a trojan was removed and i should run the virus scan. so i did. When i woke up this morning the scan said that it found one program and removed it. i also manually removed the program, but the icons were still on the desktop and the start menu. So i removed them also. I was able to change my background back to its original and the computer seemed to be working fine until i was checking my email, which i do everyday, and my virus protection popped up and and asked if i wanted to allow or block a change. Wishing i read it better, but i automatically blocked it. then all of a sudden every window on my computer shut down. so i decided to reboot. i was able to sign in and it said checking for your personal settings, but then just the background popped up. no icons, no start menu, no nothing. then i cold started it. same thing!!!!! any ideas of whats going on and what i can do to remedy this would be MUCH APPRECIATED!!! currently borrowing my roomie's computer...

A few things, firstly, the program that runs the start menu is called explorer. You need to see if this is running. Press CTRL SHIFT ESC at the same time and then choose processes. Look in the list for explorer.exe. If it not there then choose File -> Run and type explorer.exe and press ok. This might work

If this doesn't work you may need to try a System Restore. Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System restore. FOllow the instructions to return the system to the most recent point in time before the system got damaged. This will most likely work.

FInally, if that fails you will need to do a repair install of the operating system.

Dear

My solution can help you to slove your problem, to make the system run faster and more stable,.

1.You should often clean up temporary files folder.

When you operate the System or browse the websites, some activity information stored in files (C:\Documents and Settings\username\).some virus may be hided in these temporary files. It removes temporary files left by your system making it cleaner and running faster.

2. To clean the valueless data in the registry

Click start —Run,type "regedot" to open Registry Editor. Select search— search goal (type virus name, a malicious program file name),delete the key in the search results. It is better make a backup before clean-up.

3.If you don’t know the specific location where files should be cleaned up in, and are worried to delete system files by mistake, which makes the system impossible to operate normally.I can supply you several optimization software. Maybe you don’t think the optimization software can help you out of distress. But they are your right arms. They can clean temporary files and the registry and your privacy, increases your PC speed.Well adapted to computer users at different competence levels. You can click the website http://computer-optimize.com/ to find the satisfied software

do a system restore. in the mean time you can use the "windows" button on your keyboard (if it has one) to access the start menu.
