peace = calm, absence of need.

piece = part of something.

Back in the 90's, when computers ran on Intel 386 and 486 chips, if you wanted to listen to radio on your computer, you'd need to add an FM tuner card to your computer, and you'd need to add a sound card.

When Windows '98 came out, it supported USB, and, enabled a radio tuner or capture "dongle" - about the size of a memory stick, but, it had an antenna connection on one side, and a USB plug on the other. Sound cards were more frequently built into the motherboard.

Now, most computers come with either an RJ45 socket for a network cable, or a wireless network card is built in. If you have either of these, you can subsribe to an internet provider, browse the web for your favourite radio station's website, and listen "online".

If you want to pick up some local radio station that does not have a streaming website, then, yes, you'll need to get a piece of hardware called a "tuner" or "capture" device.

Nowadays, these are quite flexible (programmable), so a $100 "USB TV tuner" might be reprogrammed to pick up AM, FM, cellphones, pagers, weather satellite, GPS coordinates from aircraft overhead or ships in your nearest harbour, etc...

Another solution is to visit the nearest thrift store and find a used clock radio or 'walkman'.

"Radio" on internet is just streaming audio from radio stations who take part in it. If you just want am/fm radio, they are cheap enough to buy. BTW, you mean "piece of hardware.....".

Download Television Fanatics Toolbar on Google Chrome and you can listen to music there...
