ok, so i tried the system recovery option... but it keeps giving an error message that says:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed due to an unspecified error.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. (0x80070570)

You might want to try System Restore again and choose a different restore point.
For more information, see System Restore: frequently asked questions."

I tried all of the system restore points, and none of them work.. they all give the same error message...

if i try turning my computer on normally.. a message comes up saying: windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in 1 minute... please save your work now...

then it restarts itself in 1 minute.... i can only run the computer in safe mode... or in safe mode with the command prompt... i cant even run it in safe mode with networking... because the same message comes up...

can anyone PLEASE help me... it would really be appreciated.. thanks in advance :)

So I'm guessing this is an Win XP SP3 machine.

Try running CHKDSK /F

To do that start up in Safe mode go to the "RUN" box and type: CHKDSK /F and have it check for errors and indexing problems. Then restart the machine and try the restore function again.

PROBLEM: It sounds like a few of your system critical files have been corrupted/damaged, this may have been caused by hard drive failure, or (hopefully) a virus or two. Also, your system restore points have been corrupted/damaged, OR, the functionality to use restore points is disabled by the damage to your system critical files.

SOLUTION: Boot into safe mode, and back up your essential files onto an external hard drive. Then format your computer, and reinstall Vista. Let's hope you kept the Vista CD!

If that does not work, your hard drive is failing.

Maybe try cleaning the recovery disc under some warm water then drying it with a clean cloth don't worry i do this all the time and it doesn't wreck the disc. Try to delete the old partition that came with the computer/laptop and make a new one format it then install the recovery files. Or format the existing partition and install the recovery files onto that one
