Question:
10pts! External Drive 1TB - Backup Utility?
?

I purchased an External HD 1TB in capacity.

My question is, does any one you recommend (from experience of use) any free-ware utilities that are reliable, simplistic, and portable?

Best way of going about backing up a folder to the HD but when you delete something from the source folder but doesn't delete it from the external?

Any recommendations on uses for an external hard disk of this capacity?

10pts for best answer!

This depends a bit on your operating system. windows 7 has utilities built in for this kind of thing and if you check out the action center it should help you set it up or at least point you in the right direction. Otherwise you could go with good old drag 'n drop as i would. another option is if your computer supports raid with external sata then you could always set up a mirrored raid. you'll have to read up on it though and find out if your system even supports that configuration but it's probably the best auto backup you're ever going to get.

if you just want freeware backup software then check out: http://www.hsinlin.com/software/backup.html as they list a lot of them and go into some details on them.

Hope this helps!

Well there are some programs that will back everything up the first time and then every hour or day or week or month (whatever you set it to) it will back up just the changes. That means that the first one will take the longest and it will also have the most actual content. Then when you back it up again it will have just the new copies of everything if they were edited and if you made a new file then that will be backed up too. This way you are protected from accidentally deleting your files. So if you want to bring back a file that you deleted then you can get it. Also it will let you back up your computer to the way that it was in a certain time. It will show all of the other files that were not edited but those won't be backed up. Those will just be shortcuts so that you don't have two copies of the exact same file. But it won't show that it is a short cut.

One example of a software like this is the back up software that is built into Macs and PCs.

There are many benefits to having a program do this for you. It might give you cooler views and graphics but the main feature is that you don't have to do anything to back up. It will do it automatically.

I agree with the previous answer, I know people who`ve bought an external with the facility you mention and they`ve removed it as it was a nuisance, far better to just do it yourself.

REPLY TO ADDED INFO.

If I was an IT tech there is no way I would be asking this question on here.

I would be googling for the software and reviews of it.

Also I would probably have bought the hard drive with the facility included.

Must agree with you about the "Real questions"

Can`t understand why anyone would think you are trolling.

EDIT.

Just had a look at Gray Geek`s other answers, seems he/she thinks everyone`s either a troll or asks stupid questions.

honestly you don't need programs to do it for you, go drag the my music folder on it for all you music etc., just as if you were draggin files around normally.
