Some time it show like that only when the cd is empty. but you can write or burn by using nero like some softwares.

Does your DVD-ROM drive read and write both CD's and DVD's or just DVD's? Some read and write only DVD's. If it can do both, then make sure that the driver is installed and hasn't become corrupted. Check this by going to the control panel and opening Device Manager. Check on the list to find your DVD-ROM drive. If it has a yellow/red exclamation mark beside it, right click on it to see the problem and the solution. I believe if I were you, I'd buy CD-RW instead of CD-R disks. If you make a mistake with the CD-R, you can't load it again and add anything to the disk. The CD-RW is rewritable and can be erased or added to if space allows. The CD-R disks are sometimes referred to as "coasters" because that's all they're good for if mistakes are made. You can go to the computer manufacturers' web site to find the correct driver for your DVD-ROM if necessary.

It could be a bad drive (the lasers for CD and DVD are different) or it could be a dirty lens. Run a cleaning disk through it.
