I asked a question about saving everything on my (C:) Local Disc, before I reinstall Windows XP for the 3rd time?

Some one answered:
If you are not formatting C drive then you need not copy any thing except the folder "my documents" the rest will stay as it is .After reinstaling you can load all your programs.

What does formatting C drive mean? How do I know if my C drive has or hasn't been formatted

Formating a drive will write new boot and directory information in the base location for such things. Doing so makes anything that was previously on the drive inaccessable by normal operating system functions.

If you can't boot the system from the C drive but can access the C drive from a floppy boot disk, you know that it has been formated and no o/s installed.

Now that they have told you what it is here is how from a few sites click on the links below for more information:

When you format a disk, you erase all its files and prepare it as if it were a new, blank disk. You can format a second hard drive or a drive partition in Windows. To format your C, or boot drive, however, you need to use DOS. The following describes how to format a hard drive using Windows 95/98 or DOS 3 or later.

Windows - Second Drive or Partition

Steps:

1.

Double-click the My Computer icon.

2.

Single-click the second drive icon to select it.

3.

Open the File menu and select Format. The format window displays the hard disk capacity.

4.

Select Format type and enter a disk label. If you want to start up (boot) from the second drive, check the "Copy system files" box.

5.

Click Start. Windows displays a warning box. Read the warning, and then click OK to begin formatting.

Warnings:

The format procedure deletes all files on the hard disk. This action is not reversible. Be sure to back up any files you want to keep.

DOS - C Drive

Steps:

1.

If you are formatting the C drive, you need to boot from a floppy disk and use DOS to format the C drive. Start the computer using a startup floppy disk (see "How to Create a Startup Floppy Disk").

2.

Turn on the computer. The screen should show the A:\ prompt.

3.

Type CD C: to switch to the C drive.

4.

Type "FORMAT C: \S \V". This command formats the hard disk, transfers the appropriate system files to make it a startup disk, and prompts you for a new name. The "\V" command is optional.

5.

Enter the new disk name.

6.

Eject the floppy disk and restart the computer. The hard disk is ready to receive files.

Warnings:

The format procedure deletes all files on the hard disk. This action is not reversible. Be sure to back up any files you want to keep.

Regardless of what formatting your C drive means... back up all your data before reinstalling Windows! Assume that reinstalling Windows will delete all your existing files.

When you reinstall windows, you have the option of:

(a) erasing your entire hard drive (i.e., 'formatting the C drive'), which will delete all data files on your hard drive, or

(b) just reinstalling windows by overwriting what is currently on your hard drive. Any existing files that are not related to the operating system will remain (all your folders, files, pictures, movies, etc., will still be intact.) Sometimes you loose data, though, so be sure to back up your data first.

Note that the installation process for Windows XP will _automatically_ ask you if you want to format your hard drive, and then automatically format the drive for you. Do not following any instruction on websites for formatting your drive manually, typically they are for obsolete OS's (like Win95 or DOS).

Formatting C drive means deleting everything on your hard drive

Operating system, everything.

Back up all important files before formatting.

Make sure you have a new XP key if you use XP and are planning to reinstall it after formatting

once your drive C has been formatted, every file you stored it in will be cleared.that's why u need to backup the important file into another disk first before formatting.

formatting is like your drive C will be re-born

sure you are able to format C: force. put in a homestead windows setting up CD and boot off of that CD. in the course of the deploy procedure, about the 2d step, you may have the alternative to format and partition the problematical force.
