Windows XP. When I shut down, and applications are closing, and the computer tries to end the applications, I get a "not responding" prompt that asks if I want to exit the program or cancel. I just want windows to close everything and shut down. I have heard of a registry entry you can add to do that, but I can't find it.

Install User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Run "Microsoft OneCare Live", “full service scan”

Updates windows, virus and spyware scan, disk cleanup, disk fragmentation (if needed), backs up registry and then cleans registry, and checks for open firewall ports

Yes there's a setting in Windows for this but it doesn't always work...But, with this little program Windows will shutdown every time...fast too! Since installing this it only takes my computer 15 secs to shutdown no matter what's running...

Overview

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.

On Windows 2000 you can benefit from this service if the application event log shows event id 1000 where the message text indicates that the profile is not unloading and that the error is "Access is denied". On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 either event ids 1517 and 1524 indicate the same profile unload problem.

To accomplish this the service monitors for logged off users that still have registry hives loaded. When that happens the service determines which application have handles opened to the hives and releases them. It logs the application name and what registry keys were left open. After this the system finishes unloading the profile.

Shut down programs manually before shutting down. Also check in your system tray and press "exit". Especially to the programs Windows frequently complains about shutting down.

Go to start, control panel and then Internet Options. Click on security and then custom. Look for a command that ask you if you want to be prompted in these situations and un-check that box

Why not put a ONE BUTTON shut down on your desk top? It will save you having to use the task bar etc.

Just right click anywhere on your screen. Choose NEW, then Shortcut. Then type:

shutdown -S -T 00 and hit finish.

Now when you want to shut down, REGARDLKESS of how many apps or games you have on your multi-tasking choices, all of them will shiut down when you double click that short cut.

Oh, you should rename it anything you want. I just labeled mine

"SHUTDOWN".

Make sure you get the spaces correct betwen the various symbols.
