They are different, but are both arcvie files. The exact type of file it is follows:

- Macintosh BinHex 4 Compressed Archive

Files ending in .hqx are binary files which have been converted to

BinHex format so that they can be transmitted as ASCII text files via

the Internet. There are various utilities that will BinHex and de-BinHex

files, among them Compact Pro and StuffIt (see below). Some Mac ftp

clients such as Fetch will automatically de-BinHex files when you download

them.

& Tar is used to zip the directories So there is a lot of differences between these two formats.Both are not the same.

Looks like it is the archive format for Macintosh. There are lots of other archiving formats... like tar, zip etc.



Safe one to use is zip or tar as these formats works well in both Windows and Unix like systems.

there are tons of archive format 7-zip zip tar hqx ace all have diff programs winrar will handle all but 7 zip and 7 zip seems to compress the best
