I'm trying to transfer off my old stuff on the 98 system to my modern Vista. I just have some pics and documents I would like to save. I have USB flash drives and Ext HDD, but none of them are Win98 compatible. I have no idea of how to move the files! The old system has a 3 1/2" floppy, but my new computers do not. The old system also has a CD ROM, but no burner. They don't sell anything compatible with a system that old in the stores. Is there any way to get this stuff off the old system?!

1 - You can buy Laplink or a similar file sharing program and null modem cable.

2a - If you have an ethernet port on your Win98 system, you can use a crossover ethernet cable and network between your two PCs.

2b - If you can connect to the Internet with the Win98 system, you can upload the files to a file sharing site and download them to your other PCs.

3 - Upgrade the Win98 PC to WinXP.

4 - Buy a USB external floppy for your other PCs - about $20 if you look around.

5 - Install the Win98 hard drive in one of the new PCs, or get an externel IDE to USB cable and connect the Win98 hard drive to one of the new PCs via USB poer.

Probably some other ways, but one of these should do it for you.

I had a bunch of files on my dads win98 machine. It would recognize a 128 meg USB flash drive after installing a driver for it. It would not recognize a 1 gig USB flash drive. So I used my digital camera 128 meg card with a card reader. Some examples of a card reader.

The driver for the card reader was win98 compatible. Actually, Win98SE (Windows 98 Second Edition).

So I had to upgrade dads plain Win98 to Win98SE. If you still have plain Win98 but no Win98SE then try finding a friend/relative that still has one. And you might get by just booting by the win98se disk instead of upgrading. Or buy one off ebay.

Transferring by email. I believe gmail.com by Google limits to 20 megs. And ignore what PCTech said. He must have been drunk and stoned when he answered.

To wrap it up: Win98 Second Edition has USB support. I think it only goes up to 256meg which is impossible to find except on ebay.

Never mind, what USB flash drive you use (company). Just go to the companies website and download the driver for windows 98 for your flash drive and install it. Then your flash drive will be detected or search for the driver in google because it will be the same for all USB device.

This is same for the ext disk too.

Gud luck.

if your win98 can connect to the internet, you could try using a file-management site (like dropboks.com) to transfer the files. simply upload them to dropboks, then download them to your new computer.

Try these links. I have never dealt with this problem, but I believe it is possible.a more technical thing you can try is to install the harddrive from the old pc into the new pc case. It might sound tough but is really plug and play. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/46743

You don't need to burn... ON the old system you can save your documents and pics to disk.(cd) Just drag and drop.. These types of documents are basically read only.. They don't need to be burned. In other words you will be using your disk as a backup copy. Once copied to disk, remove from old machine, insert in new machine and copy to appropriate location.
