I need to clear computer space so I went to 'add or remove programs' and found a list of files all labelled 'window xp hotfix' with different numbers beside each of them. I've no idea where they came from so can I just delete them all or are they important?

Every time XP updates due to a security issue, software update, etc. a hotfix file gets installed. Unless you know what you're doing you're better off leaving them there. They should only be removed if an update is causing problems with software or drivers. If that ever is the case, an update causing problems, it's safer to do a System Restore to an earlier date.

To figure out what a program is or does, copy its name and paste it into your favorite search engine. This is a good way to figure out if you truly need it.

To truly free up hard drive space move files you don't need onto DVDs or CD-ROMs. Pictures, music, files, and more. Don't forget to clean up your email client. Attachments can take up valuable hard drive space and are easily overlooked.

Do NOT delete them they are all security or update programs vital to your computer's operation. If you try to delete any program that Microsoft labeled as Window XP hotfix or Window Update, you'll get a message before the deleting process takes place saying "If you delete this or these, your other programs will be affected and may not work, are you sure you want to proceed?"

From this, its common sense not to click yes button >,<

hope this helped

Those are bug/problem fix's from microsoft, they don't take up a lot of space and help keep your computer protected. DO NOT delete them. Instead look for games you no longer play, software programs you no longer use, and music and videos you can get rid of (if you don't want to lose them forever back them up to CDR or DVDR) The things that take up the most space are usually games, music, movies, and pictures from your digital camera. Deleting programs will clear up a little hard drive space but most software programs don't use up all that much space to begin with.

Tip: In add/remove programs when your looking for software to delete click each program and on the right it will say how often you use it. If it says rarely then you can probably get rid of it. Never delete anything if your completely unsure of what its for. If your confused about something google the name of the software to determine if it's worth having.
