Did you try a mnual update from the windows updates site at microsoft.com ?

Run the genuine advantage one first. If ther response is that the Windows version is NOT legitimate, there is your answer.

are you the only user on computer?

if your not, do you have administrator rights? (you need at least admin rights to install OS updates if I'm not mistaken..you can find out if you do by going to the user accounts section in the control panel)

otherwise, you might not have a legal copy of Windows, and Microsoft doesnt allow people without 'legal' copies of XP to update anymore.. did you install XP yourself, or did you buy the computer with it installed... is there a Windows XP Cd key sticker somewhere on the machine (usually on one of the sides or in back by the power supply.. its a small retangular sticker with a 25 digit alpha-numeric key)?
