Why does my computer get slow only a few hours after I clean it up?

When it's slow I do a scan with Ad Aware, Disk cleanup, I clear the browser history and cookies and it's fast again but it only lasts a few hours and then I have to do it all over again. I even do a defrag. Is this normal? I mean I would expect it to last longer without a problem, but it starts to slow down a lot after only a few hours . I think I do the clean up like 2 times a day on average. Why is this happening?

One guess would be to get some higher RAM (you didn't say your PC specs, but I know RAM helps; I got XP Pro SP2 on 128 MB of RAM, with a 64 MB Graphics Card, this system is realy slow, I'm fitting to buy some soon - 3 GB!), 'RP' suggested delete files in prefetch folder, I do too, with no problems, but I've been told from a trustworthy forum either don't delete the prefetch folder, or if you do, don't delete one or two files in it. Here is a reply to my thread on deleting cluttered files:

Be careful with this one. Don't delete layout.ini for sure. I just delete the ones I know are not used anymore. I deleted them all once and it took a long time to load windows again because it had to create the necessary ones'

"3. Cleaning out the Prefetch Files:

Remember:

It is totally unnecessary to clean out the PF files in your prefetch folder.

It is just a myth that it helps speed things up.

I would strongly advise to just leave the prefetch and it’s files alone. It does no harm and will keep your system in better running condition.

But if you must, please use caution and be advised that your system could see a slowdown in boot time.

NOTE: Do Not Delete the “Prefetch Folder”

NOTE: Do Not Remove Or Delete The “layout.ini” File Which Resides In XP'S Prefetch Folder Or You Could Slow Down Your PC At Start Up And When You Open Windows Programs."

The person who replied that to me also said:
