When and Why did the Return Key on a keyboard chage to Enter? References are appreciated.

apple wanted their mac keyboard to be different so they changed enter to return and backspace to delete

Its actually both. You can use it as a return key in text and as an enter key when you want to enter some information, like signing in to a site for one example.

I really have nothing new to offer other than confirming that Terry B's answer is the correct one. The return key is a "left over" from the word processing days mimicking typewriters.

So people in the days of the the older computerized "Word Processors" felt at home. They had "Return" just like a typewriter.

Then in the computer age it was replaced with "Enter"

Sorry no references, but I have an old word processor and it has "Return" just like a typewriter.
