To verify the performance status of your computer, follow these steps: 1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the Performance tab.
If you see the "Your system is configured for optimal performance" message under Performance Status, your computer is using 32-bit CD-ROM drivers.
If you see a message that states that some drives are using MS-DOS compatibility under Performance Status, you may be using real mode (16-bit) CD-ROM drivers. If this is the case, you may not be able to read certain files on the CD.
Contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive to obtain an updated, protected mode driver for your CD-ROM drive. For information about how to contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive, click the appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

4. Close Properties.
5. Double-click My Computer.
6. Right-click drive where drive is drive letter of the hard disk where Microsoft Windows is installed.
7. Click Properties.
8. On the General tab, note the quantity of available hard disk space under Free space. • Microsoft Works 2000 Standard requires 135-150 megabytes (MB) of available hard disk space.
• Microsoft Works Suite 2000 requires 820 MB of available hard disk space.
9. Click OK, and then close the My Computer window.
10. To verify the microprocessing power of your CPU, see the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact your hardware manufacturer. • Works 2000 Standard requires a Multimedia PC with a Pentium 90 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor.

for error 1603 (Fatal Error During Installation)
Error 1603 is a generic machine-specific issue. One or more of the following fixes may resolve the error.
This error is known to occur on computers that do not have enough disk space for the installation. To increase your hard disk space, follow the instructions in How Do I Increase Hard Disk Space on My Computer?
The Temp directory is not clean. To clean the Temp directory, follow the instructions in Clean the Temp Directory.
A certain file on the machine is locked. To fix this:
Close all applications running in the background.
Reboot your computer.
Run the installation again.
If you are using Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, or NT, the Windows Installer Service may not be properly installed on the machine. Update the system with the latest Windows Installer Service by following the instructions in How Do I Install the Windows Installer Engine on My Computer?
On Windows NT, 2000, or XP, make sure you have administrative privileges. To confirm you have administrative privileges, follow the instructions in Acquire Administrative Privileges on Your Computer.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Installer Cleanup utility to remove traces of previous installations. This utility does not remove files installed by the installation, which may need to be removed manually.
