1) Get an antivirus. I use something called NOD32 and it's worked very well for me so far. Avoid AVG, it is the worst pile of rubbish going. My friend had it and it managed to bypass alot of bad stuff. Not to be trusted! 2) It sounds like your power supply. If your computer is going to fast for itself, you need to let it keep up. Also, having a good cooling system is vital. Your processor should have a good fan, check if it's clogged with dust and brush it out gently with a soft brush. Make sure your case's outlet for the fans air isnt obstructed in any way. BUT, it could be any part such as your RAM failing at a big task, or your processor failing at doing something it doesnt like.

I agree that your friend's PC probably has a virus which prevents updating the antivirus database by shutting off the PC.

One way around this is to download the database using another PC and then load it onto this PC. Then when you run the antivirus program, it should be able to scan, find, and neutralize the virus.

Good luck

Reboot in safe mode and that way all Internet is shut down. Conduct all scans possible anti virus, ad ware, spy ware. If you dont have all of these things got to a PC that has Internet safe connection and down load them. Use Spy bot Search and Destroy, and Ad Aware SE, your anti virus if you dont have one you can download a trial version of Norton or Zone Labs. Once you have all of these things put them on a jump and load them onto the problem PC. Scan and trouble shoot.

If it's not a virus then it may be a video card problem.

Find the latest driver and DL it.

It is too weird not to be a virus. Especially since the internet is in the description of the symptoms.

Popup Blocker:

Spend time surfing the Internet and you know about pop-up advertisements, small windows that open automatically to promote Web sites or products. Some pop-ups are benign; others more malevolent, spawning new pop-ups as quickly as you can close them – causing your Internet connection to slow dramatically as your browser tries to load all the unwanted incoming data.

With the Popup Blocker, you can block these pop-up Web pages, often shutting them down before you are aware of them. It also filters many Web page graphical advertisements on the pages you visit. Preventing these ads speeds your Web page loading times dramatically by cutting out the content you don’t need while leaving the information you do.

The Popup Blocker is installed into the System Tray where you can manage popups as you surf the Internet.

To enable the Popup Blocker tool:

Check the Enable System Mechanic Popup Blocker tool check box.

To add a window title rule to the Black List:

Click Add and the Black List - Add new Popup Window Title Rule window appears. Active browser window titles are listed in the large box.

Type the name of a window to block in the empty text box.

Note: When adding an open popup to your Black list, the popup window closes immediately and is prevented from appearing in the future. It also adds the browser name to the list. This only works if you use one Web browser. To block that popup from all browsers and website is blocked you use, add a new rule to the list.

Enabling Homepage Guard will keep your Internet home page from changing without your knowledge. It stops malware, adware, viruses and other Web sites from taking you anywhere you do not want to go.

Enabling Search Page Guard keeps your Internet search page from changing without your knowledge. It stops malware, adware, viruses and other Web sites from taking you anywhere you do not want to go.

It could be a virus or the browser application or one of it's support files could have gotten crosslinked with the utility that's used to shut down windows.

I would remove all temp files from the system by using the Disk Cleanup utility.

START > ACESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > DISK CLEANUP

Then, when that's done open the Windows Explorer and go down to My Computer and click on the plus sign. Right click on drive C:, and go down to properties and then go over to tools and click on "Check Now" in the "Error-Checking" area. Check both boxes when you are prompted.

If that doesn't fix the problem and you can't get rid of it with any Anti-virus software that has been recomended, then you will need to use the restore CD that came with the computer to set it back to factory spec. When you do that make sure you complety format the hard drive in the process or you will have a problem and will be asking for more help.

You may or may not want to back up the data on the hard drive first. One risk of backing up the data is you risk bringing back the virus after you fix the computer, unless you get a real good anti-virus software package on there to protect the system; that's assuming it was a virus that caused the problem in the first place.
