I want to store, not play, a dvd I own into my computer. What software or method do I use? Will it freeze up my computer for other uses, or can I continue to use my Mac for browsing, tasks?

You need to use a program to rip the DVD to your hard drive.

Handbrake is a good free one, but it can only rip unprotected DVDs.

Use HandBrake. It's open source, free and easy-to use.
