I have DSL service with a rate of 3mbs. When I am downloading a program or other file you see a box with information on the download status that shows the transfer rate as KB/sec. With the 3mbs DSL service what is the range I should be seeing as transfer rate in KB/seconds?

384 but dont assume you will get the 3 MBps. Time of day, distance from the server, the servers upload speed all have an effect on the actual speed. If you are doing 250, you are doing above average. An important note: if you are on a wireless home network, you are losing an average of 30 percent of your actual internet speed due to wireless network latency. Wireless is no where near as good as a wired connection to your router. The farther away from your router on a wireless PC, the less speed you get. ALL of my desktops are wired to the router. I only use laptops for simple browsing. When its "git down" time for downloads, I use a desktop.

Though you will not get the 100% max speed since of several factors.

You can get speeds ranging to 300 Kilobyte per second to a maximum of 384 Kilobyte per seconds.

Note: 1 byte=8 bits

Most internet speeds are shown or measured in bits so 3 megabits per second is

3072 bits divided by 8= 384 KB

since 1024 bits in 1 megabit

as this is data transfer, its done in bits

3mbs = 3 megabits per second,

a bit is one piece of information - either a 1 or a 0

so

1 kilobit is 1.000 bits

1 megabit is 1.000.000 bits or 1.000 kilobits

so there is a little math to work out,

(data storage is done in kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes - a byte is 8 bits)

there is not any thank you to grantee a minimum obtain, in occasion in case you bought a game from a kenyan guy (severe latency for the situation you're logged in) who has dial-up connection it is going to final years to you bought the document. Your ISP can no longer grantee speed downloads.

300KB per second if it was running at max speed.

Often DSL connections will only give around half the max speed - so 150KB+
