I went onto this website:

http://www.xubuntu.com/get

and under Xubuntu Mirrors (9.10 Karmic Koala), I clicked Australia.

Which led me to this site:

http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/ubuntu/xubuntu/9.10/release/

Then went down to

xubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso

and downloaded it.
Now I don't really know if I picked the right one.
I have an old 32 - bit, Pentium 4 PC with 512MB of RAM, 32 MB of Memory and about 1.8 - 2.0 GHz of processing power, I think.
So, would this suit my needs?
Or did I just waste 664 MB of my Internet Download Plan?

Also, this website which has the file I needed to download, is it an illegal site or are you legally able to download Xubuntu from this site.

Because I went under Download Mirror, clicked Australia and that was what happened?

32MB of memory? The Xubuntu should work perfectly fine as long as you have enough hard drive disk space. Something like 2GB i think. You just need to burn the ISO to a CD and you can then install it on your computer.

Take it from me everything is legal and above board, Xubuntu will run on 128 megabytes of ram and your old computer will run fine on 512, so don't worry X/K.Ubuntu are well known Linux operating systems but are not the best, though many think it is, because like windows that's all they know, Linux Mint 8 is a better system and easier to learn, You can go with what you have downloaded for now and play with it, then later on download Linux Mint 8, with Mint 8 all the hardware drivers are set up for you, with x/k ubuntu you have to download some of the proprietary drivers and install them

I would guess that Xubuntu is related to Ubuntu, and I use a form of that called Ultimate Edition.

Ubuntu is a form of Linux, Linux is designed and released for free by people who believe operating systems should be free and/or that we shouldn't be forced to use MS stuff.

So yes, it's legal to get it free. :)

They use mirrors because many web hosting sites have a limit to how much can be downloaded from the site, and I know Ultimate Edition often went over their quota before they switched to using mirrors.

From the sounds of it, you have quite a capable computer, you should be able to give it a shot.

Now, Ultimate Edition makes for a DVD that can boot a computer and allow me to try it out before I install. If you're lucky, Xubuntu can too. In which case, you can try-before-you-buy as it were.

From the size - and file extension - this is a CD image. You have to burn it to a CD using a burning software which is able to burn images (look for that word - image - in a phrase like Burn An Image).

Once you've burnt the CD, I feel certain that you can boot with it, my only question is whether you can try running it, or if booting will only install. :)

1) Xubuntu is good for small old computers.

2) Whichever site you downloaded it from, you'd get the same thing. ifyou're in Oz, an Australian server was your best choice, but if you're not that just means that the download probably took longer than it would have from a closer server. Install it, have fun with it and, if you need any more help, use http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php They know Ubuntu, Kbuntu and Xubuntu, and they're a nice bunch of people.

Xubuntu is open-source os, so it's not illegal. However, i do think you donloaded the right one. For a 32 bit comp. you needed the X86 or 32 bit download. I think the i386 is the right one, but i'm not sure.
