Right now I've got a split with Windows 7 Ultimate, and Ubuntu 10.10. Well, right now the Ubuntu partition is limited to 8GB of space. I'm planning on getting rid of Windows altogether and running just Ubuntu, but, there's some files(music, pictures, etc), on Windows that I would rather not lose. If there any way to keep those files from being formatted?

I would copy all the pictures etc onto a DVD or external drive and then move them into the ubuntu partition when you have finished.

Or upload them to somewhere like dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/install

You can just remove the Windows 7 entry from the grub menu (using Startup Manager maybe, it's in the repo's) and delete the Windows system files and whatever else you don't need. In other words, leave the Windows NTFS partition right where it is. You may want to resize the partitions to give yourself a (much) larger /home directory. You can do the resizing with a boot disc like Gparted or Puppy. What I would do is add an entry for the NTFS partition to fstab so that it mounts when you boot Ubuntu. That way you won't get an error message when apps go looking for data on a partition that's not mounted.

Or you could just copy the files to a thumbdrive and install Ubuntu over the whole harddrive - you would want to back up your valued files before doing anything to the harddrive anyway.

You are going to need some serious re-partitioning here. Unless Ubuntu put all its' folders into one partition you will possibly need to create larger partitions at least for /home, and maybe others. If it is all one partition then you will need to back up all the files to an external source, then remove the Windows partitions and expand Ubuntu to take up the space. do not forget to edit the grub boot loader to eliminate the option for Windows as well.

So..

If you are searching for Dropbox you can download it for free here http://bitly.com/1rXod9Z

Very useful program!
