There are many things that speed up your computer. Most people at one point HAD a fast computer, but through putting all of their programs on it and swamping the registry the computer becomes very sluggish.

The most important thing to try before anything else is defragging it. To do this you can go to start/program files/applications/system tools/defragmentation. Defragment all of your hard drives if you've got more than one. You should also do this about once a month.

Another thing that's important is to make sure that it's actually your computer being slow; that is to say, make sure it's not a worm or a virus. You should run an anti-virus program such as AVG free version or super anti-virus is a good one.

A third thing that you can do is run a registry cleaner, CCleaner is a good one.

And finally there's overclocking, this is the only thing that actually makes your computer run faster than when you first got it. Although, it's pretty complicated to explain, you would be better off either sending me a email about it or asking a separate question about it if you're interested. There's also a certain amount of risk to it, making your computer unstable. Do the first 3 things first.

The reason the computer gets slow is due to the registry files becoming corrupted, or messed up, in simple terms. These files tell the computer or laptop how to operate the software installed on the system. If any of these files get messed up, the computer is not sure what to do and this will really slow down the computer. The other scenario is where you download other software, screensavers, pictures, videos, or even music, and this will somehow change the settings on a registry file. When this happens, the original program that needs that file now has the wrong instructions in it. So, it will cause the computer to run slow, or in a worse case, crash.

You can speed up your computer with a thorough analysis and repair of your registry. The registry Scan will identify corrupt files, paths, and registry keys causing your computer to have errors and run slow.Go to http://www.registry-bot.com to download registry bot.It is the most advanced and comprehensive registry repair product on the market. It will speed up your computer and make windows startup faster.

Problem 1: Temporary files have built up on your hard disk

Some tasks might require you to leave the system working for several days and this might cause temporary files to build up on your hard disk. This might be a reason why your computer is slowing down and is taking some time to boot up as these type of files tend to be memory consuming.

How to delete Temporary Files?

1. Open “My Computer” and select your local drive (it is usually labeled as :\C)

2. Select the “Windows” folder and locate the folder labeled “Temp”

3. Use your mouse to right-click on the folder (not the contents) and in the “View” options, choose “Details”

4. Select all the files that are older than the current date and press the delete key.

5. When done, go to the Recycle Bin on your desktop and choose “Empty Recycle Bin”

You can also choose to delete the Temporary Internet Files that have accumulated on your system

1. Go to your “Start” button and open “Control Panel”

4. When done, press “Apply” and “OK”

When you finish removing the Temporary Files, reboot your computer.

Problem 2: Your computer has been infected

If your computer has been infected by a virus, a malware, a worm or a Trojan, it might have cause the slow down of your computer system and even freeze several tasks at hand. Hence, you should run a virus scan and remove all the infected files found on your system.

Defragmenting your hard disk

You can also choose to defragment your hard disk to gather some dispersed spaces that can be used by the computer again.

1. Go to your “Start” menu and list all programs

2. In the “Accessories” option, select “System Tools”

Depends on your hardware and software. Generally just clearing the desktop and leaving the default background (no wallpaper) then running anti-virus will help a lot.

Free things like Avast and Anti-Malware bytes are great.

You can also try CCleaner to clean the registry but make sure you use the safe setting.

If you are using windows, adjust it for best performance by going to START the CONTROL PANEL then SYSTEM then ADVANCED in performance settings select ADJUST FO RBEST PERFORMANCE.

If your machine is really old and weak, running 32 bit ubuntu would be good for you, although if you are unfamiliar with linux it would take you a little while to set it up the way you like it.
