Question:
Playing & Understanding .MKV & other File extensions?

I'm not too up on the file extensions or whatever they're called. But every once in a while I want to play a video online & I already know that my ps3 doesn't support .mkv, but my pc doesn't either and I would have thought that i'd have the codecs & everything for it. I have the windows media player, vlc player & some other program that was installed on this pc, it's pretty new & runs win8, it's like a $1500 computer so id like to be able to do something with it when I want. Anyways, my questions are mostly with understanding what an .mkv is, is it same type of thing as saying an .avi or .mp4 etc? or are some mp4's coded with this .mkv stuff also. That plus it'd be nice to know whats so special about it, a quick search online (wiki, answers etc) says that there's probably not gonna be a factory installed program that plays it, so what's the point? why not just make it an .avi or something that everybody can play? Does it circumvent the cinavia crap on blurays or something?

.mkv is a file container that can contain multiple video, audio, subtitle and etc tracks.

So they are very common, especially for dvd/blue-ray rips of things containing multiple tracks.

(.mkv is a container not a codec btw)

VLC media player should be able to play them by default, but if not then jsut download and install http://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm and you will be able to play every video and audio file that exists lol

EDIT: lol @ josh....

someone's too much of an apple fanboy... no... apple did NOT create the .mkv container (its also NOT a form of compression, idk where you got that idea either :/)

The MKV format is quite prevalent in the video files which is a new video file format to people. Referring to MKV(the extension of Matroska vidoe format), it is in fact an extensible open standard video container format which can hold multiple video, audio, picture, and subtitle tracks into one file. The most reason for its popularity lies in the practicality which indicates that the MKV format can be supported by almost every media player included Media Player Classic, Quick Time, BS Player, Zoom Player, Mplayer, Pot Player, GOM Player, even Windows Media Player, and etc.

The extensions are types of compression. Different effects can result from each and some people have come to prefer specific ones. .mkv is actually an apple compression that you will have problems with on windows based devices. I am not saying that you cannot play them, I just find it harder to deal with.

If you are looking to stream movies to a TV then check out tversity. It is compatible with your ps3 and many other devices. You will still have problems with the .mkv extension, but go pick up a WD Live media stream box or Roku and it will likely stream just fine. I think you are actually interested in a home media server.

AVI files, even though identical extension .Avi, will also be made up in many formats internally. Inner layout is called codec. You want whatever codec the file is made in, to play the file. If file is small, that you can open it in notepad to peer what is the codec. It will be first four letters when opend in notepad/wordpad. Or use the program gspot to find the codec, after which install the codec. Easy way: install klm codec percent- it has lots of the codecs.
