upgrading linux 8.04 to 10.04?

Question

my update manager says that 10.04 update is available but whenever i try to install it i get this

Error during update

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.
W:Failed to fetch http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/lucid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

now i have tried to do the sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and i made sure that it was all old.release.ubuntu/ubuntu hardy... but i still get the error

Ubuntu Hardy is not classed as an old-release therefore the repositories you are trying to access do not exist.



Your sources list should look like this assuming no additional ppa repositories have been added



Open a Terminal and submit the following command



sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list



deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-updates main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-security main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ hardy partner



Once your sources looks like this go to the top left hand corner and click save



Go back in to the Terminal and do



sudo apt-get update





Upgrading using this method can be fraught with problems and a Fresh installation is what I always recommend. Remember Backup the data you want to save first

sudo apt-get update

Don't bother. Just download it and boot cd it.
