I have a computer running Windows Home Server that I just installed FileZilla Server on. I've configured the server, I opened the ftp port 20-21 on my router (Netgear WNR3500), I've added the program to the exceptions list in both firewalls (Windows Firewall and Symantec Endpoint Protection), and I've run the configuration wizard on FileZilla client several times... I've even had a friend try logging on from another state. Here's the problem: I can connect, but I keep getting "Response: 425 Can't open data connection. Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing." So I can connect to the server, but I can't see any of my files or folders, so naturally the connection just idles until it times out and disconnects. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Try connecting to the server with Filezilla client running on the same computer. If you can't see your files (I suspect you won't be able to), wither you don't have the account set up correctly (whatever account is running the server has to have access to the home directory, or to a directory that Everyone has access to) or Filezilla server installed incorrectly (I'm betting on the first problem - the setup). Start over, setting up a group, then an account.

it relatively is not in any respect uncommon for residential companies to block the ports used via servers (21 for ftp being one in all them). A community hint from the originating customer might help pin it down precisely.

You can never run 2 firewalls at the same time. They will just fight each other. Turn 1 off and try again.
