Try this:

In versions of Word prior to Word 2007:

1. Select all the text you want line numbered.

2. Click the File->Page Setup menu item.

3. Click the Layout tab.

4. In the Apply To list box, select Selected Text.

5. Click the Line Numbers... button.

6. Set your line numbers.

7. OK out of everything.

In Word 2007:

1. Select all the text you want line numbered.

2. Click the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

3. Click the Line Numbers button.

4. Click Line Numbering Options.

5. Continue as in Step 4, above.

Hope that helps.

Try this: 1 Go to the File->Page Setup menu item. 2. Click the Layout tab. 3. Check the Different Odd and Even box. 4. Check the Different First Page box. 5. Click OK. 6. Click on Insert->Page numbers. "Outside" should be selected for Alignment. 7. Click OK. If you don't already have more than two pages to look at, I suggest putting in two page breaks to verify the positioning with Print Preview. That should do it.

Highlight the lines to which you want to add line numbers and then select the format menu and then the bullets and numbering sub menu. this should only add line numbers to the selected text
