I got a bad virus a while ago, and no matter what I did from restoring to rescue cds, my computer just can't get rid of it so I've given up. It's slowed down my computer a lot and plays around with my mouse, but whenever I click on My Computer and click on for example 'Removeable Disk (I:)' it just freezes and stops responding. I have to open up Task Manager and end it, which then makes my startmenu/bar disappear for a while and i have to wait for it to reappear.
How can I get this to stop and get My Computer to respond?
(And 'get someone to fix it' isn't an option because I don't have the time or money >.<)

1) What you're doing with Task Manager is stopping the desktop (the program is explorer.exe). That freezes the computer (as far as what you can see) until explorer is running again. (You can't end explorer - it always reruns.)

2) Try repairing Windows - http://webdingers.com/wordpress/2010/03/repairing-windows/

3) If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to do a cold Windows install. Put the Windows disk in the drive (you'll need the original Windows disk, not a restore or rescue disk. If you don't have one, buy frm the computer manufacturer. They run about $10-$25. If you can't afford that, you can't fix your computer.)

Turn the computer off. (This is important.) Turn the computer on, press the key you're told to press to go to Setup. (If you have a "Boot Order prompt, use that and boot from CD.) Set the Boot Order so the CD drive comes before the hard drive. Save and exit. If you're prompted to press a key to boot from CD, press a key.

Follow the instructions to install Windows. When you're asked if you want to format, say yes and choose Full format. Finish installing Windows. Your computer will be virus-free. (Until the next time you download a virus, so the first use of your new Windows installation should be to search the web to learn how to not download viruses.)

If you're using a generic Windows disk, not one from the computer manufacturer, use a different computer, go to your computer manufacturer's site and download all the drivers for your computer for your version of Windows. Put them on a CD or flash drive, so you can install them on your computer after you install Windows. (You won't be able to get on the internet to get them until you've installed the one you need to get to the internet.)

If your computer is still freezing, then you should clean out the registry. This is a database which stores information and settings about your computer and is also where a lot of errors occur inside the Windows system. You should download and use a 'registry cleaner' program to scan through the registry and remove any of the damaged settings that are inside it. These tools are widely available online and are able to fix your PC and make it run like it did when it was new.You can stop computer freezes by following the tutorial above. We've found that using a 'registry cleaner' to fix any errors inside your computer is actually one of the best ways to stop your PC from crashing all the time.I should like to commend Registry Easy http://computer-work-smooth.com to you ! You can scan your pc for free! Good luck!

This may be due to corrupt windows registry. The registry system is a really complicated one in the operating system. There are zillions of registry entries stored in the database which contains information about the softwares, hardwares and other files and programs present in our computer. One unfortunate thing that almost every Windows user encounters at some time is that his computer registry gets corrupted. Most people who become victim of the registry corruption find themselves clueless as they could not figure out why their anti-virus and anti-spyware software are not finding any solution for the common PC errors such as the crashes, freezes and annoying pop-up error messages. Not only this, by using a number of computer protection softwares, people make their computer slower than before. The best way is to run a registry scan and clean registry. It not only remove many type of errors but also speed up computer. For a look at one of the best registry software, run a free scan from Intel Directory http://ibx.intel.com/directory/productpage/tabid/85/language/en-us/p-4869-reginout-pc-optimizer-reg-cleaner.aspx

This will sort out your problem.

Maintaining your computer

1. Left click on C drive> properties/run windows disc cleaner

2. Download Ccleaner from here: http://www.filehippo.com/

3. Install Ccleaner and run the cleaner top left, then run the registry cleaner below it on the left. you don’t need to backup the registry

4. Left click on C drive> properties>Tools>disc scanner or in the case of Vista it’s called something else, but it’s the top tab you click on> Prompt the scanner to scan upon next reboot and REBOOT COMPUTER)

#(Prepare to wait up to an hour)#

5. After Disk scan/Disk check has finished run windows Disc Cleaner again, Ccleaner again and registry cleaner again.

6. Then you must do a DEFRAGMENTAION of C drive which is START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>TOOLS>DEFRAGMENTATION.

It should restart and hopefully it'll boot for you then.If you have the original CD of your operating system you can go into BIOS. Upon boot up keep pressing , F8 , F10or F11.
