firstly,

a good antivirus that offers full protection, office 2003, power DVD to play movies, k lite codec pack, nero burning software to burn cd's and dvd's, adobe acrobat reader to read pdf documents, winrar or winzip to handle zip and rar archives, and diskeeper to defragment the hard drive and keep it at it's optimum working level.

that's about it.

Add this to your frontline, real-time counter-measures arsenal:

"Sandboxie"

runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

Use it for:

Secure Web Browsing: Running your Web browser under the protection of Sandboxie means that all malicious software downloaded by the browser is trapped in the sandbox and can be deleted when closing the sandbox.

Enhanced Privacy: Browsing history, cookies, and cached temporary files collected while Web browsing stay in the sandbox and don't leak into Windows.

Secure E-mail: Viruses and other malicious software that might be hiding in your email can't break out of the sandbox and can't infect your real system.

Freeware. (http://www.sandboxie.com/)

Not overly difficult to use. Don't presume total impunity: it does have limits: listen to 'Security Now' #174 for more details (http://www.grc.com/securitynow.htm)

Freeware. Ultra small footprint. Minor issues with XP & webcam (for me anyway)

Not for 64 bit Vista platform.

It depends on what the computer is going to be used for. What's best for my computer might not be best for your friend's computer.

(For Office-type programs, get Open Office. It's better than Microsoft Office, and the full version is free. http://www.openoffice.org/ )
