What does "cannot create primary surface" mean?

When I try to play pool or any of the fun games :) It comes up with Error "cannot create primary surface" I am kind of new to computers so I don`t know what that means or is or how to fix it can someone please lay it out for me in like childs terms cause I dont know anything about the tecthinical stuff on a computer. Also I have an old computer it has windows 2000me please help

Windows 2000 and ME are two different operating systems. The primary surface error is a rendering issue; go to Start>Run and type "dxdiag.exe". Check to see if you have the latest version of DirectX ( latest non-Vista version is 9.0c ) by looking on the list that pops up; it is the last item on that list. If you don't have the latest version, go here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en and download it. I'm not sure if Windows ME supports DX9.0c, so if you have ME, well, hehe, you are better off upgrading to XP (not Vista) in any case. Windows 2000 (Professional) is a good operating system; ME is not. If that doesn't fix it, download the latest drivers for your video card; do a Google search for "[YOUR VIDEO CARD MAKE/MODEL] drivers" and make sure the page you download from is actually the website of your video card manufacturer. If both of those don't fix it you probably have a pretty unique problem and are better off getting the geek down the street to take a look, as long as he knows what he's doing ;)

Typically this error happens when another application has created a primary surface in exclusive mode. Meaning another cannot be created until the lock is removed through that program or it is shut down, whichever happens first.
