Two ways:

1) Start with your camera. Change the setting to lowest pixel size but to High Quality so they can still be crisp at that resolution.

From the camera control button, usually located near the LCD screen. Press menu and scroll for the picture setting. From there experiment taking photo at various settings until you can find the best settings for your picture's size and quality.

2) Software resizing. Most cameras comes with a photo editor CD. Intall it on your computer and view the photo you have taken. From the menu tool bar, go to rezise photo. There will be a dialog box showing the pixel size of the photo you opened. Reduce the number on the vertical and horizontal. Usually the vertical adjustment syncronize to the horizontal. Don't worry you can always undo the result if you are not happy with it, or better yet, copy the picture you want to edit and edit only the copied photo.

There's a really good open source freeware program called The Gimp. You can download it from the official website. If you're running Windows you also need The Gimp runtime environment, because it was originally written for Linux. Its got all the features of Photoshop 7 but its free and legal. You can buy tutorial books, which I'd recommend.

Theres also IrfanView and JAlbum, one of these will re-size but I can't remember which one.

You need to look at the resolution of your image, measured in dots per inch (dpi ). For web graphics 72 dpi is standard, for printing you'd want about 300 dpi. Then look at the width and height in pixels. An avatar is usually between 80 - 100 pixels across.

Finally you need to save for the web. This strips out any uneccesary info from the file (like the date and author) to keep the filesize down. Save as a jpeg, and you can drop the image quality to between 60-80 to make a smaller file.

The way I do it...

In Adobe Photoshop, go to Image ~ Image Size ~ and change the resolution to say 72. Then SAVE AS so you don't lose the high-quality picture. I usually save as JPG.

You can either use the camera to make the resolution a little smaller. Or, you can download a editor tool. I use a simple little tool called irfan view. If is free, simple to use and you can convert the images to many different file types.

If you dont want to download anything, then go to start menu, then ACCESSORIES, and then use the PAINT program. Then open your picture using that program and you can change the size of the picture.

Just click on Image and then STRETCH/SKEW and you can decrease the size. Make it 50% if you want it half the size. Then just save it again.

Use any graphic editor. Photoshop, Picasa, Microsoft Photo Editor or even Paint
