I know I just asked about torrents. I hope i'm not getting on your nerves. I just wanted to ask how do you use the player. The videos I want to play are avi files. How do I make it play on the VLC media player instead of my Windows Media Player? Like I say most of the time, I have Windows Vista so if that has anything to do with it help with that in mind. Remember, whoever has the best answer gets those 10 points.

Go through Windows Explorer and right click on the avi file. Under Properties, go to Associations and change the default program from Windows Media Player to VLC Player. That way, all you need to do is double click on the avi file, and VLC should automatically kick in.

Hope this of Help

VLC is the most compatible if you are too lazy to go out and find the codecs (which a full codec pack will do for you, easily). But my preference is Media Player Classic, which is more customizable and faster.

VLC is a portable app, so you don't have to install it to use it. BUT! one advantage to install VLC is the installer will associate the file types for you. this allows VLC to become your default player for the .avi files you wish to play.

Download the installer (http://www.videolan.org/mirror.html?mirror=http://mirror.services.wisc.edu/mirrors/videolan/&file=vlc/0.8.6h/win32/vlc-0.8.6h-win32.exe)

Run the installer..

Select the option to associate vlc with the filetypes you want...

Install finished!

You're ready to go, just double click on that .avi file and VLC will open up and start playing. I hope this is the best answer to your question!

The reason that I do not use VLC is because he is difficult to use. I therefore use Gomplayer. It is also free, does also play all file types, has also all the necessary codecs. and is much easier to use
