I have Windows 8 and when I first booted it up I was horrified at how ghey everything was. But I downloaded a start menu app, got the computer to boot to the desktop, uninstall every single 'tile app' or whatever those stupid things were, and now my computer functions EXACTLY like a windows computer should, and nothing like a cell phone, which the RETARDS @ microsoft were going for. God I hate when they screw up a good thing. Anyway, Windows 8 can be modified to run just like windows 7, plus its faster, has enhanced stability, all of the features are improved, and I can't believe I'm about to say this... but... Windows 8.1 is the best operating system I've used so far. I might not even want to upgrade next go around. It really works/looks/functions that good AFTER****** I removed all the gheyness inside it.

when OH had an Apple Mac computer he reckoned their software beat the pants off any Microsoft OS, (still is given reviews and popularity of iPhone and iPad) . I was using an early MS OS then . I started on a Vic 20, then on to Commodore about 40 years ago. The first computer I ever used was a Vic 20 followed by Commodore 64 but don't remember the OS names now! Given I started work using a manual typewriter aged 16, have also progressed through all the OS that MS produced, XP was my favourite - then I bought a new computer 2 years ago with Windows 8 on it - I had been retired 6 years and was flummoxed - 2.5 weeks later had aneurysm and brain haemorrhage and now am still flummoxed - more so if anything = just treated myself to an iPad Air2 and can't get my head round that at all, although the recent updates with 8.1 seem to make operating both pc and tablet very similar. Now I think Yahoo is going same way, with their mobile app - it won't be long before they have a Windows pc app p then perhaps missing emails will turn up in our email accounts - well I hope so!

I'm guessing the majority of respondents to this question weren't born before 2000, given the plethora of "Windows 7" and such responses.

The truth is, computer operating systems have been in place since the late 1940s. And there were some very notable OSes over the years. VAX/VMS from Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) was a favorite in its day. IBM's System/360 was one of the world's most widely-used computer operating systems. Even Apple's pre-OS X releases were game changers in their day.

While developments in operating systems are evolutionary, there hasn't been a truly revolutionary OS in years. Let's face it - the primary purpose of an operating system is to be a layer between the hardware and the software. Everyone's answers tend to lean toward the "look and feel" of a graphical user interface (GUI), but those are simply bolt-ons to an operating system. What makes an OS truly great are things like multitasking, memory management, disk access and throughput, reliability (extended periods of operation without crashing), and those things that aren't "sexy," but make a computer dependable and valuable.

Mac OS 9. It was the most user friendly and yet advanced OS. OS 10 added features not available in 9, but 9 could run almost all earlier Mac software. OS 10 required new versions to be produced, making many applications unusable. Granted , OS 10 added "Classic"support to use those earlier apps, but "Classic" was actually a version of OS 9. The later OS 10 versions became more and more complicated and less supportive of earlier app versions. OS 10-7 and on won't even run on an older Mac. Windows has made an almost constant requirement for upgrading of applications with each new Windows release. This makes any older Windows compatible apps useless when you upgrade Windows. XP was the last Windows version that offered any form of older support and even that was very limited. I run Windows 8.1.1 through Parallels on a 12 core MacPro and OS 10.9.5. I can't believe how many old Mac and PC apps I have that I can't use. Haven't updated to 10.10 yet only because I've seen some weak points I want to see improved before I upgrade. It may be a free upgrade, but unless it does everything I want it to, it isn't worth the price to me.

I am going to take a diplomatic approach to your question as at current state of computing technology it is not a valid question to ask which is greatest OS.

Windows has the monoploy of having most of the application support. Then again that makes it the same reason why it most vulnerable as attackers target it most. Microsoft handles these quite well.

Macs are good, but again they are similar to UNIX systems, makes them no different from Linux OSs. The advantage is just the added support and bug fixes they have to keep it stable. Also the added application support.

Coming to linux now, my personal opinion is that Linux(UBUNTU for one) are the greatest OSs. My choice is based on fact that they have less levels of abstraction. This allows a user do everything they want with the internal architechture of the system.

Linux is also good for normal users as the GUI systems in them have improved so much over last decade. Support is the greatest ever as its community. It just takes you to llok for right places to get your questions answered. One can always customize they way it worls for them and increase there productivity.

And since linux is free and opensource, no matter what you do in it, there always minimalist chance of facing a lawsuit :D

Don't be misled. There are are plenty of systems far better than windows. Some experts say that UNIX is really stable and safe. That is the reason why LINUX is based upon that system. Also, these experts say that, even though Windows is a good OS, it has many flaws; for example, it allows active content, making the computer easy target for hackers.

Windows in every way. It is the most popular and almost every application is a .exe which is windows based.

Microsoft s Best and most common OS was Windows XP. It offered everything your average and very nerdy people needed in an OS. In fact, had MS not canceled support for it, some businesses (like my mom s) would still be using it. Windows XP was the farthest jump MS has ever made.

Now Windows Vista is kind of a beta for 7, so Windows 7 wins there but 8.1 beats it with instant startup and tons of integrated features. But now with Windows 10 coming out, there is no better choice for getting stuff done (plus, it is free). Just use the Windows 10 preview and you will see that is has the most out of any OS MS has made.

Windows 10 wins for the present OS challenge, but XP will never outlive its legacy.

Windows XP or Windows 8

If you want to do business and really get some work done then windows xp is the way to go. In my opinion it has the best performance in the work environment.

If you want tons of free gadgets and apps then use windows 8.1 because it give you a good layout that is easy on the eyes. Sure windows XP was better, due to windows no longer supporting it windows 8.1 is the best. I also have found that the Chinese distrobution of Windows 8.1 is even better that the U.S. version because of the increased amount of apps that can customize the way it runs. I have a lot of Chinese friends so I might be a little biased.

From personal experience, Vista sucks and it's old, same with XP, that's old, you want newer! Windows 7 for sure is great... Also I'd say Windows 8. I have that now and I like it, you can toggle between a normal desktop screen like Windows 7 type screen, or the Windows 8 screen (different looking)

There really is no contest here. Windows XP is the best OS ever in terms of longevity, compatibility, and ease of use. There is a very good reeason it lasted so long. I personally don't use it anymore. I have my gaming computer with Win 7 and my Windows tablet with Win 8.1. I love the apps on 8.1 but for serious gaming 7 is hard to beat.
2015-03-10 11:55:44 UTC
Opinion based on my experience: 1. Unix and 2. Linux. Both fast, reliable, and consistent. Neither one ever crashed after years of use. But I'm sure most folks will say Windows or Mac versions because it's the OS you generally get with PCs.

Windows XP won out over the choices of nearly every new Windows OS since XP was introduced. Many businesses and banks, as well as millions of individuals were using Windows XP since it was introduced to the public in October of 2001. And to this day, many people refuse to give XP up. Even though its security is pretty much as vulnerable as can be if XP is used for online activity, people are willing to take that risk.

3:1 was great, it only took me a few years to master it. By then 95 came out and soon 98 which I learned in only two years. Ah, how I love XP, because it stuck around long enough for me to use it to my advantage. Then, the big boys wanted to sell their faster computers and a market was created.where older units just couldn't keep up. Hmmm. Nowadays, It takes Windows 8 speed to get around the bandpass robbing ads that we don't ask for.

In my opinion (with simplified reasons)...

Ubuntu (Linux): Perfect for both longtime Linux fans and folks new to Linux distros.

Mountain Lion (Apple): Extremely simple to use, requires very little effort to understand and operate.

However, an OS is only perfect if it's compatible with its user. You wouldn't install OpenSUSE on the PC of someone who's computer illiterate.

windows for gamers, After that linux for everything else, It does what windows does but at zero cost for the O/S and programs.

But that is my own opinon Many will have more, Mostly Windows or OSX but they cost way too much, Linux if free and if you install WINE (Windows Emulator which is also free) you can put most windows programs on it.

iOS 6.1.6 or 8.1 because they are the simplest and best-looking/ most optimized of them all, and run over 1.3 million apps, most of which are still compatible since version 3.1.3 of iOS, are resolution adaptable, and has the cloud built in natively.
