go to the sync mode and turn off the format conversion
Tools> Options> Devices> Advanced
and uncheck "allow audio files to convert in the background" so they won't be converted into wmas.
and for the dude 2 below me, mp3s are unprotected and don't have licenses, and there are unprotected wmas. only protected wmas do.

cause microsoft set it up that way, i believe it has something to do with the pirating of music.... in media player the wma file gets a lisence to play that song of a specificate amount of time then it runs out and you gotta re-record the song onto your computer otherwise media player won't play it no more..... that's why i always convert my music to mp3's before going into media player with them.... mp3 lisences never run out for whatever reason... the best suggestion i got is to use another program to transfer the songs to your phone....

are you trying to rip a cd? cuz i don't think WMP will simply convert a mp3 file to .avi
if you're ripping a cd then go to: Tools > Options > Rip Music > Format - change it to mp3.

You need to go to the options and select the format you want WMP to rip to. By default its WMV files.
