It doesn't make your internet speed faster. This is governed by how fast your Internet Service Provider throttles your speed to, and by the capacity of the medium which it is being transferred through (phone line, cable line, satellite, 3G, 4G, etc.)

A newer internet router may provide that internet at a bigger wireless range, with more stability, along with ROUTING the internet faster. However, it does not make your actual internet faster.

Due to increased speed that your Internet service provider gives you, your old router might be bottleneck in your connection. Newer routers have more proccesing power, and they can serve much more computers (if you have several computers in your home).

So, not necessarily, you migth want to get new router only if old router cannot serve you with speed that your ISP gives you.

But, if your old router does it's job properly, getting new router won't give you faster internet connection.

There seems to be a problem with newer routers regarding their expanded buffers, which works against the 'speed' of handling packets**; so it's not an automatic go-fast solution if you have problems in other areas.
