when you boot the computer press F8 at the first screen and enter LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION from the list of of startup options. If that doesnt work then try SAFE MODE from the same list and either do a system restore or right click the C: drive click properties, click tools and check the disk for errors. You may need to fix the operating system with the origional xp disk, to do this you need to boot the computer from the xp disk and enter system recovery, link is to a deatailed explanation of how to do this

The problem can be a number of issues. A virus could of nuked your pc and just added one change to a system file and this can happen. A bad windows update could of recently updated your system and corrupted a system file. Best way to fix it is by getting your original XP cd and keep hitting F12 when the computer starts up. Boot from CD then run Recovery console.

Recovery console will basically replace any corrupt XP system files.

There are other ways, but it requires knowledge of linux. The problem could also be hardware based so by removing a few hardware pieces you might be able to fix the problem.

Chances are you can't get to safe mode or any other option. And I'm pretty sure you clicked "last known good configuration" since that is the first option. What does that do? Just loops you back to where you started?

You could have a faulty hardware device like sound, video or cd rom or usb device.

You could have the recycle virus that destroys the system volume information. (my son had this). You can get this virus from usb memory sticks or from web sites that say you need the latest flash update when you already have the latest flash update installed.

if you got this virus you have to reformat and reinstall windows.

try this

Safe Mode Bootup

=============

Try this, its easy and will not harm anything

Slowly tap the F8 key while the computer is powering up

Just after the screen goes blank, the F8 key will point the computer to a menu where safe mode can be selected.

Note if you mistakenly tap F8 key again, it will continue through to normal boot

Scroll and select Last known good configuration.

This is stronger than doing a system restore in normal mode.

Wait till the boot has finished before clicking anything.

If you able to get in , to see if you got a virus do this.

XP- Right click My Computer Icon >manage >storage >disk managenet. In the RHS you should see you C drive. If C drive is missing then you need to re- image or reformat .

considering you stated it quite is positive in Safemode, it appears like there is the two a startup software or provider working interior the historic past it particularly is inflicting the priority. it might additionally be brought about via a driver it particularly is being loaded while working in accepted mode. To do away with any historic past software, or non microsoft provider you may desire to attempt clearing out all of those products that initiate in accepted Mode, yet dont in Safemode. to do this: click on initiate/run and kind in msconfig and click ok. this could elevate the device configuration application. click on the startup tab and click the disable all button on the backside good. To get admission to device restore, pass to start|All classes|upload-ons|device strategies|device restore and tell it to repair to an till now time. Then choose a date from the calendar while it grew to become into final working wisely. could be unmountable_boot_volume

it means that the os need to load windows xp cant be loaded.

it may be that the drive has crashed(from overheating, static, or poor cables) or that the files are simply corrupted (caused by viruses, a fragmented drive, or poor maintenance)
