ok, here goes...

i turned on the computer this morning. when i clicked on the "josh" icon, it said something like "your local profile has been lost". i have now lost all my documents and programs etc. i went onto the C:/ drive, docs and settings and my documents. i have now found the my docs file, however, the folder is too large to fit in my new my documents (which is empty). is there any way i can create a hyperlink or something, so that when i click "my docs", it takes me to this folder on the c drive.
also, as i am worried about losing all my stuff, i intend to put all my important docs onto dropbox. do i just copy and paste the files into dropbox? then can i access them via the internet? also, if i put it in the public folder, does that mean anyone can look at my work?

thanks for your help!!!

Sometimes viruses attack the registry and alter your account's profile directory location setting. This is especially prominent with Windows XP viruses attacking Windows Vista or Windows 7 computers. You can try installing an antivirus and running that, but chances are that it won't do anything.

Instead of copying the folder over, why not cut and paste? When you cut and paste it just changes the addresses of the folders instead of actually trying to make duplicate copies.

However, this is just a minor patch to an overall larger problem - you should really just reinstall the operating system after you back up files to an external hard drive.

Last time I tried a "Urgent help needed" question, I got thrown out of Answers.... I lost my account too. My computer smoked quite a bit due to the stress - Admittedly I did thump it a few times, and I now have a few loose keys, but I did find the withdrawal method to be successful, though rather unsatisfying. If I wore a patch for every packet of ciggies I got through every day, I'd be in a band aid commercial, though would suggest you withdraw yourself from said computer, and pour a drink... That way, you get sticky keys, and a schmokin computer!!!

If you *cut* and paste there should be enough room for you to move everything over.

You can't create a symlink on windows.

You can paste into dropbox and access from internet but there is a limited storage amount there...

Public folder will only show whats in it if you have it set up that way (And as a major security flaw, all windows come with that enabled)

If you are using Windows:

Right click on the My Documents folder. Select Create Shortcut. Drag the shortcut to where you want to access it. You can rename it if you want because it will say "Shortcut to My Documents."

Sorry, don't know about dropbox.
