Like other programs, µTorrent needs to store information about it current state. On Windows, this is usually a subdirectory of the %appdata% folder. If for some reason this directory, or some files in this directory, were deleted or became corrupted, it would cause the program to lose information about the torrents that were currently loaded.

Like you said though, the data that you downloaded is still there, so it's not a total loss. If you still have the original .torrent files, and didn't have that many loaded, you might be able to just reload them into the program (when asked where to download to, choose the directory that the completed files from that torrent are already in). If not, you might want to visit the %appdata%\uTorrent folder and see if you can recover any files from it.

(%appdata% is an enviroment variable that Windows understands. Type it into the address bar in Windows Explorer and it'll go to the correct folder.)

Don't freak out ! Check your utorrent settings. The download must have got cleared from the list automatically for this specific action being active.

The FBI has tracked you down and are now in the process of removing your torrents. Expect a knock on the door in the next few days and have your ID ready.
