A formula always begins with the = sign. When you enter the = sign in a cell, Excel knows you are asking a question. Excel will attempt to evaluate the formula you have put in the cell, and produce the answer. The formula could be a simple piece of math like

=1+1

or it could be a bunch of references to other cells

=A1+A2

or it could use one or more of Excel's many inbuilt FUNCTIONS. Excel has nearly 200 different functions covering math, dates, statistical data, text, logical data etc. You can even design your own functions (if you know how to use Excel's programming language, Visual basic).

You must enter your formulas in the correct way, otherwise you will get an error message. Excel has several ways of troubleshooting formulas. It will ask you for input at each stage of entering the formula. It will try to correct your formula if you make a mistake - like not putting enough brackets, or not putting in the = sign at the beginning.. You can ask for help on each function by pressing F1. There is also an evaluation tool which examines your formula in more detail.

I took Algorithm Development last semester, it was fun! Any programming or Computer classes, you never really said if you were in High School or College.

There's an interesting invention that exists on the internet named "Google".

I suggest using it.
