I have totally lost confidence in Gmail as they demand to know more and more information about you - before you know it they will be suspending your account unless you give them details of your bank account and sex life!!! Yahoo is better but I keep having problems sending attachments and sometimes have difficulty accessing the account - I suspect their systems are rather overloaded. Hotmail/msn I ceased to use because of security issues. Mail.com I consider to be rather extortionate and find their page confusing. When I have mail directed to my house, I can put what name on I wish, and its contents are private, and after the postman puts it through the letterbox it is perfectly secure.
All I want is an online version of that. I dont want google or yahoo scanning my every email and then bombarding me with adverts for flights to malaga when I email them and tell them that I plan on going to malaga. I dont want to trust google when they are constantly changing their terms and conditions and suddenly suspend your account for non compliance of something like not giving them my mobile phone number. In principle I would like to close all my google accounts and transfer them to a decent mail provider. But does anyone know of one out there? Is there a good email provider which is free and which can be accessed from any computer? By the way, I'm also sick of using Google as a search engine - I find I get better results from dogpile without being bombarded with adverts for the things I am searching for.

Here's a list of email services and why they're good (alot of sights i went to said gmail was good but who cares what they think (; ) and i'll also tell you i hear that outlook.com is bad :

www.zoho.com/mail : "solid email service with ample storage,... some integration with instant messaging and online office suites. Aimed at professional users," this email "could be even more helpful organizing mail, identifying key messages and contacts, and sending oft-used replies." these guys have IMAP and POP.

http://www.mail.aol.com/ : (aka AIM) "shines with unlimited online storage, very good spam protection and a rich, easy to use interface." i warn you, though, they dont have any labels, smart folders, or message threading, but has excellent IMAP & POP access.

hushmail.com: registration is easy, no ads, encrypted, very easy to use. but you must login every 3 weeks w/ free version or you lose the account. it encrypts your messages so only the person it was intended for can read it, but to do this you have to click the “encrypt message” and “digitally sign” checkboxes when composing. When sending to a non-Hushmail user, the security comes in the form of a link to a secure webpage where you are presented with a question that, if answered correctly, grants access to the encrypted email message. if they answer wrong 5 times, the email is disabled forever. Also, while the message is being sent, it can be accesed by cyber criminals, the government, etc. but if you have no problem with that, it's pretty simple.

yandex.com: primarily known as the leading search engine in Russia, where its bigger than google, it includes things google doesnt. While the service’s native tongue is Russian, it is also offered in an English version. Yandex Mail includes features you won’t find on Gmail, including an automated follow-up feature that will remind you if you haven’t received a reply to your email within five days.

have fun!
