I just bought an external hard drive, but don't know how to backup my computer files to it. It's the My Book Essential edition. It doesn't appear to have come with software to back up my files. I'm running XP; but don't have the "XP Disc" that microsoft says to use to access the windows backup program. Can I get that somewhere else? I'm clueless! Thanks, -TROD

i guess you have an oem version of windows, in this case you won't be able to install windows backup utility.

i'd advice you to use 3d party backup prog, like true image, i think it is the best backup software for now.:

you can get it for 30$ on newegg.com

You don't need to use the Windows Backup Program. There are many backup programs available on the internet. I highly suggest using Maxtor's MaxBlast, when you install it under 'Drive Utilities' you will find a Drive-to-Drive copy utility.

Good luck!

definite, you're able to do it with the two CD's or DVD's, however the DVD would be easier by way of fact it may carry extra documents in keeping with disk. yet differently would be to purchase an exterior complicated force, and replica all the record syou prefer onto it. That way, no longer purely are you able to've backups for now, yet you need to use it to fully save backups sooner or later, in case you truthfully do get an epidemic. i do no longer think of which you will could concern a pair of virus getting backed up, except you bypass deep into your laptop's "equipment folders" while backing up information (which you do no longer could do, by way of fact all the equipment folders and information would be re-put in once you place in the OS after reformatting your HD).

I also can recommend you to use True Image. I think Acronis offers the best backup solutions on market for now.
