Ok so I have a 2 year old Acer Aspire 1810TZ netbook/laptop thing, Windows 7, 64 bit.

I'm not sure if this is the cause, but a few weeks ago, I was trying to get the scheduler to turn the computer on from hibernation and wake me up with music in the morning (I've since deleted all these schedules, just in case, but with no luck). Around that time, a few weeks ago, I went to turn it on and it almost got to the desktop, but then it stopped at a black screen for ages. I had to power it off manually and then reboot it. It then said that Windows hadn't started properly and that it recommended that I allow it to auto search and repair any problems. I did this, it couldn't fix it it said, and then asked if I had any devices plugged in (which I didn't). After that it said it would try to restore the computer to an earlier date. It did that and then it worked OK, but it was quite slow.

Recently it's gotten much worse. I had to restart it 3 times before it actually got so I could use it, and just like before, no luck with the auto repairing and it had to do a system restore thing. When it did finally start up, it was incredibly slow. I even saw the frame of a "windows explorer" window come up! It only started running at a usable speed after I tried for ages to uninstall some programs using the control panel (I thought that maybe it needed a clean-up as I only have 20GB left on my harddrive). This clean up didn't work either, and it's still incredibly slow, although it seems to have stopped getting stuck at the black screen part, which is something.

Sorry I don't have all the technical names for stuff, I don't know much about computers unfortunately and I'm worried that I won't get anything working next time.

Any ideas? My disks say they don't need defragging so apart from a full system restore, I don't know what to do. I've run full virus scans and stuff, but I can't find anything (I have a feeling that maybe it is a virus though, and that I'm just using the wrong program, that is, Microsoft Security Essentials, to find it).

I'd be so thankful if someone out there with some computer smarts could me out here, I'm in over my head!

Thanks heaps for your answers!

Have you opened the computer case and cleaned out the dust ?

The processor has a circuit that monitors the processor temperature; if the temperature gets too high the circuit will slow down the processor. If the temperature gets past a certain point the circuit will shut down the processor completely.

Scroll down to look at the picture of dust buildup.

If you do not want to open the device take it to a laptop repair shop and ask them to remove any dust from the interior. And ask them to let you see how bad the dust buildup is.

With Windoze, sometimes you just have to start all over again, and re-install it. Save your files and drivers to a USB drive. Re-install with 64 bit windowze 7.
