Unfortunately you did not give enough information. Are you using it for an Enterprise, Small Business, Home? Are using it for file, websites, Terminal Server, Game server?
The reason I want you to ask yourself such question is that the answer is "all of the above". for generic hobby based servers, any computer boxes, run off a Ubuntu Server Edition (which has a kernel compiled for server), is more than sufficient.
However, if I want to be more stable and have more guarantee, even DIY would require you to have server grade hardware. Thus, For small business, I would recommend one to build a few boxes from scratch if it's affordable (though used server-grade stuff maybe sufficent... keyword, maybe). If you are using it for enterprise, or want really good guarantee, consider a big name; you are buying more than the products, but also its services.

iptables would not require a brilliant style of CPU or RAM. we clear out at something like 5Gbps utilising that. Dansguardian i do no longer comprehend. internet caching it relies upon on the bandwidth. present day cache hits would be in RAM. try asking on squid boards. i grew to become right into a huge fan of internet cache some years decrease back however the only place it quite worked nicely grew to become into Australia - various hits on Microsoft and Yahoo and so on. on the costly end of an undersea cable. Now all of us seems to run dynamic pages that isn't cache, or pushes their content fabric out to the sting on Akamai and so on.
