what is .VOB file...?

i tried converting .AVI to .DVD(ntsc format), but when it was done converting it came out a .VOB file...whys that?

A .vob file is a container file used as the standard format for DVDs. If you want to watch the movie on a DVD player, all you have to do is burn the files onto a disc. If it'll fit on a CD, i'm pretty sure you can just burn it onto a CD and the DVD player will read it just like any other DVD.

.vob files are MPEG video files. That very big file is the full converted video (assuming you are converting an hour-long video) and the smaller ones on DVDs are usually bonus content that aren't as long as the main feature. Conversion takes a video in one format (flash, avi, divx, whatnot) and converts it to another, often more usable format (mpeg, mp4...). MPEG doesn't compress well, so it consumes a lot of hard drive space. But it's the only format that makes a DVD what it is.

There is no file called .DVD, DVD uses .VOB files.
