What's the difference between Windows 2000 and Windows XP?

Intended For

Windows XP

Windows 2000

Windows 2000 and Windows XP are essentially the same operating system (known internally as Windows NT 5.0 and Windows NT 5.1, respectively.) Here are some considerations if you're trying to decide which version to use:

Windows 2000 benefits

Windows 2000 has lower system requirements, and has a simpler interface (no "Styles" to mess with).

Windows 2000 is slightly less expensive, and has no product activation.

Windows 2000 has been out for a while, and most of the common problems and security holes have been uncovered and fixed.

Third-party software and hardware products that aren't yet XP-compatible may be compatible with Windows 2000; check the manufacturers of your devices and applications for XP support before you upgrade.

Windows XP benefits

Windows XP is somewhat faster than Windows 2000, assuming you have a fast processor and tons of memory (although it will run fine with a 300Mhz Pentium II and 128MB of RAM).

The new Windows XP interface is more cheerful and colorful than earlier versions, although the less-cartoony "Classic" interface can still be used if desired.

Windows XP has more bells and whistles, such as the Windows Movie Maker, built-in CD writer support, the Internet Connection Firewall, and Remote Desktop Connection.

Windows XP has better support for games and comes with more games than Windows 2000.

Windows XP is the latest OS - if you don't upgrade now, you'll probably end up migrating to XP eventually anyway, and we mere mortals can only take so many OS upgrades.

Manufacturers of existing hardware and software products are more likely to add Windows XP compatibility now than Windows 2000 compatibility.

Windows XP has several features that distinguish it from Windows 2000.

1. The Luna interface.

2. Integrated zip functionality.

3. Remote Assistance.

4. Integrated CD burning.

5. Hyperthreading support

6. User-mode driver framework (created after XP was released, and never backported).

7. Windows Movie Maker

8. Fast User Switching

9. The option to run tasks as an "Administrator" while logged in as an unprivileged account (pity this isn't done more often).

MS Word is an Office application has nothing to do with Operating systems which are win 2000, XP and Vista as you mentioned you will need to know OS so you can determine which printer driver to use otherwise will not work click on start> Run then type msinfo32, this will tell you which OS you are running or you can just right click on My Computer or Computer and go to Properties

Windows XP System uses the Microsoft called "Luna" of the operating system interface, this interface than previous versions of Windows had completely changed, "Luna" user made a thoughtful, humane designed to provide users with an integrated window appearance, so that Windows XP looks more intuitive and friendly.

XP is indeed better than 2000. It is not only exceptionally beautiful picture, in a way you can match with the Mac, and indeed for people in early contact with computers very considerate of users, user-friendly design. Such as its Group similar taskbar feature allows the user's task bar more compact and less open window; its built-in integrated firewall, ZIP and other compressed file format support, powerful multimedia features, pictures, thumbnail and slide show function and so on, are much convenient for users.

they are both different operating systems based off of the NT kernel. 2000 came first, then XP.

one key difference is win2k does not have a built in firewall but XP does.
