Question:
Why won't Quicktime play the majority of my video files?

I have a new iMac (Mac OS X 10.5.6) but it just will not play the majority of my video files - .avi, .mov, etc. The only one it seems to play is .mp4. I download a lot of anime, which are usually .avi or .mov, but it will either be a black screen with the sound, or the image but no sound. I've downloaded all of the components Apple tells me to, but nothing is working. I've even uninstalled Quicktime and reinstalled it, but the same thing happens. I know there are alternative video players like VLC, but I really like Quicktime so I'd like to make it work. Any ideas?

Quicktime can play on AVI, MOV and MP4 video.

All you can use this mac video converter to convert your video to mov video, I know quicktime supports mov video well.

Make sure your file associations are set to handle all the file types you want played.

Open QT player> Edit> Preferences> QT Preferences> File types: go through the list and tick the ones you want.

Back on the 'Browser' tab> MIME settings button> here again, tick what you want.
